Frequently asked questions

Questions about The ERETAI Foundation.

Plain answers to the questions we hear most. Anything missing? Write to info@eretai.org.

Why are there three organizations named ERETAI?

Because ERETAI is one community served by three organizations, each answering to someone different. The community is the graduates, students, and faculty of the U.S. military’s planning and strategy schools (SAMS, SAASS, SAW, MAWS, JAWS, BSAP, and JADS) and the planners of JECC. The ERETAI Foundation, the organization on this site, answers to that community and to the public that educated it. The ERETAI Group answers to its clients. The ERETAI Institute will answer to the mission of carrying the planning discipline beyond national defense. Put any two under one roof and one bends the other, so each has its own job and its own reason to exist. The vision is three separate entities united in a singular purpose. Today, The ERETAI Group, LLC operates, the Foundation is in formation, and the Institute’s first programs are planned for 2027.

What does “ERETAI” mean?

In ancient Greek, the eretai were the oarsmen of a trireme: unseen, synchronized, and essential. Nobody rowed for himself. Our closing words come from them: Row well and live.

What does The ERETAI Foundation do?

It connects military-educated operational planners and strategists to each other, through ERETAI Connect and ERETAI Chapters, and to the world, through ERETAI Commons.

Is The ERETAI Foundation operating today?

It is in formation: a Virginia nonstock corporation being organized by its founder and an interim board. It is not yet incorporated, not tax-exempt, and accepting no contributions. When it is formed and able to accept gifts, it will say so here, plainly. Until then, The ERETAI Group, LLC operates ERETAI Connect for the community.

Who can join ERETAI Connect?

Graduates, students, and faculty of SAMS, SAASS, SAW, MAWS, JAWS, BSAP, and JADS. Practitioners, such as the planners of JECC, may also request membership, vouched for by a verified member.

How do I join?

Request your invitation. One short form: your school, your year, and where you are now. A member checks it, not an algorithm. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Can payment buy a seat?

No. Your seat rests on your education or your service.

Will my information be sold, or used to sell me consulting?

No. We do not sell personal data. Consulting opportunities, the Group’s included, are posted inside Connect on the same terms for every organization, and reach only the members who have said they are open to them.

Does The ERETAI Foundation speak for the Department of Defense or the schools?

No. The ERETAI Foundation is independent of, and not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by, the Department of Defense, the military departments, National Defense University, or any school named on this site. School names identify the education our members received.

How can I help?

Be findable: take your seat. Then, if you can, pull a little harder: start a chapter near a school or in a city with classmates in it, or send the note to the one who should be here and isn’t. Not from these schools? Read Community Notes, and when ERETAI Commons gathers near you, come meet the people who plan for a living.
